Description
MEWP is the acronym commonly used for Mobile Elevating Work Platforms. MEWP’s is a powered working platform used to provide temporary access at height.
They are designed to provide temporary working platforms that easily can be moved around a site when required.
It is typically used for short duration work or where access to multiple locations on site is required. It is a substitute where ladders are unsafe to use and scaffolding isn’t cost effective or impracticable.
MEWP’s are also known under various other names such as:
- Aerial platform
- Vertical lift
- Powered access
- Spider lift
- Cherry picker
- Scissor lift
- Aerial work platform
- Boom lift
- Access platform
Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 requires employers to undertake a risk assessment where use of MEWP’s would need to be covered. Other regulations that need to be complied with when using a MEWP are The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 and The Work at Height Regulations 2005.
